Sak Yant for Women: What to Know Before You Choose One
In short
Yes, women can get a sak yant. A sak yant does not discriminate between men and women, and today men and women get them in similar numbers. Fewer Cambodian women wore them in the past because more men joined the army. Women choose a design at our ashram by what they need it for.
Can women get a sak yant?
Yes. A sak yant does not discriminate between men and women, and women receive them at our ashram in Siem Reap. Today men and women get sak yant in similar numbers.
A Khmer sak yant is a sacred design of Khmer script, animals or figures, tattooed with a blessing. Nothing in that description depends on who wears it.

Why do fewer Cambodian women have sak yant?
Because for most of its history in Cambodia, sak yant was asked for by soldiers and fighters, and most of them were men. Some Cambodian women have sak yant too, but only a small number, because in the past far more men than women joined the army. The Phnom Penh Post noted in 2016 that in Cambodia sak yant "have most frequently been sought out ... by soldiers, who would cover their body in the life-protecting designs" (The Phnom Penh Post, January 2016).
That was the reason, not a rule. The same Phnom Penh Post article told the story of an Australian woman living in Phnom Penh who went to a Khmer master for a sak yant because, in her words, "I felt like I needed protection", and afterwards said, "I felt protected."
Which sak yant do women choose?
Start from what you want the yant for, then choose the design with the artist. Every sak yant is made for one of three great purposes:
- Fear: to prevent or protect.
- Need: to liberate or solve.
- Deficiency: to disperse or dissolve.
So the first question is not "what suits a woman?" but "what do I need protecting from, or helping with?" Women at our ashram have chosen, among others:
- an Earth element yantra at the nape, "for protection, peace and good luck";
- the Three lines Mantras down the spine, one line each for love and luck, for protection, and for the four elements (what the three lines mean);
- a Hanuman Yantra on the upper arm (Hanuman sak yant);
- Yant Kla, the tiger, on the shoulder or across the upper back (tiger sak yant);
- the Two Naga Yantra across the upper back (naga sak yant);
- the direction yantra, for protection "everywhere you go or travel";
- Makot Pich, the Diamond Crown, a small yantra on each finger.
Small designs are not lesser ones: a small yantra we tattooed in 2026 held enough meaning for the woman who wears it.

Tigers are among the animals Cambodian magic tattoos normally show, as the Phnom Penh Post reported in 2011 (The Phnom Penh Post, 1 June 2011). For other designs, see the designs we tattoo.
What does a Khmer tattoo mean on a woman?
The same as on a man. A sak yant's meaning comes with its design, and a tiger, a Hanuman or a yant of Khmer script stands for what it was made for, whoever wears it. Every design and its meaning is in Khmer tattoo meanings.
Where on the body can a woman get a sak yant?
Most sak yant go from the hip up, and some designs have their own specific place on the body. The legs are mostly for animals, though not every animal may go there, and for some protection mantras and good luck mantras.
Designs that stand for the Buddha, gods, great hermits or kings are never tattooed on the legs. Within those rules, our pieces sit on the back and the spine, the nape of the neck, the shoulder, the arm, the chest, the back of the hand and, for an animal, the calf; see our work, by placement on the body.
Size matters as much as place. A small, hand-size design can be done in a single visit, while large pieces start with a consultation. Size does not decide everything: one woman's upper back of several yantras was finished in a single session.

What should I ask before I choose?
Bring these questions to your consultation, or send them on WhatsApp before you travel:
Bring your idea, not a picture. Come with an idea of what you want, what you like and the meaning you need.
What is the design for? Ask what it protects against or helps with, in your own language.
Where may it go? Some designs have their own place on the body.
What does the script say? Ask the artist to tell you before it is tapped.
Rod or machine? Hand-tapping with a long rod takes longer; a machine is quicker.
Does it come with anything to keep? Ask whether your design carries any rules after the blessing.
How long will it take? That depends on the design and its size.
Every stage of a session, with pain, healing and aftercare, is in getting a sak yant, step by step. For how we price a sak yant and how to find us, see how to visit us in Siem Reap.
