Sak Yant Tattoos are not discriminatory against men and women. The reason we don't see as many Sak Yant tattoos on Cambodian women is because historically, a larger proportion of men joined the army compared to women, and SakYant where done to give protection and strenght to the soldiers.
However, it is important to note that there are also some Cambodian women with Sak Yant tattoos, although their numbers are relatively small. Nowadays, both men and women have an equal opportunity to get Sak Yant tattoos, as they are appreciated for their love, beauty, and profound meaning.
Here are the three main dimensions of SakYant Tattoo:
- Empowering Protection: Safeguarding against Fear
- Liberation and Resolution: Fulfilling Desires and Needs
- Dispelling Deficiencies: Unleashing Positive Energies
In the realm of SakYant tattoos, placement matters! While the allure of new designs may captivate, it's essential to consult an expert in the art of SakYant to ensure the historical accuracy of the design.
SakYant design come from Various Influences:
- Buddhism (Mahayana and Hinayana)
- Brahmanism or Hinduism (myths like Ramayana and Mahabharata)
- Depictions of naked Humans and Animals (Could it be from the Kamasutra Bible?)
- Spiritual Beliefs
- Khmer Legends and Literature
- Adherence to Standard Rules
A Word of Caution:
Misplacements have been observed in some SakYant tattoos, especially the SakYant made in other countries. There are also a lot of designs which are said to be traditional but are not originally from the traditional Khmer (Cambodian) culture. In traditional Khmer culture certain designs hold specific significance, representing Buddha, gods, revered hermits, divine animals, commanders, kings, and more. Certain parts of the body are not suitable to certain tattoos. For example, the legs may not be suitable for certain SakYant tattoos.
I strongly recommend seeking the guidance of a Cambodian master or a SakYant specialist, as they possess the sacred expertise to assist you on your journey. I hold no blame towards other SakYant artists, but I must emphasize that meeting me assures you of getting the most authentic, trustworthy, and comprehensive knowledge about SakYant tattoos.
